1. Overview #
BuddyPress is a popular social networking plugin that adds community features to a WordPress site. The Directorist – BuddyPress Integration extension connects your directory to a BuddyPress-powered community, so members can view, add, and manage listings without leaving their BuddyPress profile.
With this extension active, members can:
- View their listings and favorited listings from their BuddyPress profile
- Add a new listing directly from their profile
- Favorite listings from the archive or single listing page
- Assign listings to a BuddyPress group, visible only to that group’s members
- Share a listing, or a “new listing” activity update, to the BuddyPress activity feed
- Message a listing owner using BuddyPress Private Messaging, from the listing card or the single listing page
- Have Directorist’s login and registration pages redirect to BuddyPress’s own login and registration pages
Prerequisites #
- Directorist (core plugin) installed and active
- BuddyPress plugin installed and active
- A BuddyPress-compatible theme is recommended, though not required
2. Installation and Configuration #
Step 1 – Install the extension #
- Make sure Directorist and BuddyPress are both installed and active before you install this extension.
- Go to WP Admin → Directorist → Themes and Extensions, and log in with your Directorist account to install and activate Directorist – BuddyPress Integration.

Step 2 – Configure the extension #
Path: WP Admin → Directorist → Directorist Settings → Extension Settings → BuddyPress
The settings panel is split into three sections: User Profile, Group Directory, and Pages.
User Profile #
- Turn on Add Listing Sharing to let users share an activity update on the timeline or activity feed whenever they create a new listing.

- Turn on Allow Listing Sharing to add a “share to timeline” option to the Single Listing page’s Share menu, letting any visitor share that listing to their own timeline or activity feed.

- Set Share Button Text to change the label shown for the sharing option (defaults to “On Timeline”).
- Set My Listings Default View to Grid View, List View, or Map View to control how listings are displayed by default on the member’s My Listings and Favorites tabs.
- Set Listings Per Page to control how many listings load at once on those tabs. Keep this number low (3–12) for faster page loads.
- Click Save.

Group Directory #
- Turn on Enable Group Directory Listings to let group admins attach directory listings to their BuddyPress group. Listings assigned to one group are only visible to members of that group.
- Set Listings Default View (Grid View, List View, or Map View) for how listings display inside a group’s Listings tab.
- Set Listings Per Page for how many listings load at once inside a group’s Listings tab.
- Click Save.
Group listings only work if the Groups component is active in BuddyPress. To check this, go to WP Admin → Settings → BuddyPress → Components and make sure User Groups is turned on.

See Add Listings to Groups for the full walkthrough of assigning listings to a group.
Pages #
- Turn on Login Redirect to send visitors to the BuddyPress login page instead of Directorist’s own login page.
- Turn on Registration Redirect to send visitors to the BuddyPress registration page instead of Directorist’s own registration page.
- Click Save.

3. Add Listings #
Once the extension is active, a Listings tab is added to every member’s BuddyPress profile, and a matching Listings item is added under My Account in the WP Admin Toolbar.

Step 1 – Open the Add Listing tab #
On your own BuddyPress profile, click the Listings tab, then click the Add Listing sub-tab. This sub-tab is only visible when you’re viewing your own profile.
Alternatively, from the WP Admin Toolbar, go to My Account → Listings → Add Listing.
Step 2 – Fill in and submit the listing #
Fill in the listing form and submit it the same way you would from Directorist’s regular front-end submission form. The fields shown here come from your directory type’s Add Listing form, configured through the Directorist Builder.
To change which fields appear on this form, go to Directorist → Directory Builder → Add Listing Form for the relevant directory type.
4. Add Listings to Groups #

Group members can see all assigned listings on the group’s Listings tab, which only appears once listings are enabled for that group.

5. How to Use BuddyPress Private Messaging in Directorist #
This lets a visitor message a listing owner directly through BuddyPress’s Private Messaging, from either the listing card on the archive page or the single listing page.
Prerequisites #
The Private Messaging component must be active. Go to WP Admin → Settings → BuddyPress → Components and turn on Private Messaging.

Step 1 – Add the message button to listing cards (All Listings Page) #
- Go to Directorist Listings → Builder → All Listings Page for the relevant directory type.
- In the card layout editor, drag the BuddyPress Message widget into the card’s footer.
- Click on the widget to open its settings, and set the Button Text (defaults to “Send Message”) and, optionally, an Icon.
- Click Update to save the layout.

This adds a message button to every listing card.

Step 2 – Add the message button to the single listing page #
- Go to Directorist Listings → Builder → Single Listing Page for the relevant directory type.
- Under Other Fields, drag the BuddyPress Message widget into the Active Fields area.
- Click on the widget to open its settings, and set the Button Text and, optionally, an Icon.
- Click Update to save the layout.

Viewing the result #
After adding the widget, a message button appears on the single listing page. Clicking it takes the visitor to the BuddyPress messaging interface, addressed to the listing owner.
The listing owner receives the message in their BuddyPress inbox as usual.
